No speed fines given on M25 in a year

It has been reported that drivers speeding on the M25 have not been issued with a single ticket by overhead cameras over the past year.

This comes as a result of technical and legal difficulties, which has prevented the Highways Agency from being able to switch on the network of 36 new digital cameras. The cameras were designed to enforce speed limits on the London motorway.

Although the police handle camera enforcement, some safety groups have condemned this complete “incompetence” by the agency, as they have failed to identify traffic offenders.

This comes as a concern to many safety groups as around 500,000 drivers use the M25 every day; it is one of Europe’s busiest motorways, where offenders have been caught via cameras since 1995.

Jim Fitzpatrick, Labour’s road safety spokesman, said: “This revelation is unbelievable.

“The M25 is already used as a racetrack by a number of reckless drivers. If there is one place where we need working cameras it is on that stretch of motorway.”

“If they believe the cameras are doing any good why aren’t they using them?

“If they do not believe that they are doing any good they should remove them and stop the paranoia they create by their presence.”
